I’m fighting an issue with a Windows server server at the moment. It will not install updates. No error message is given, check in Event Viewer and it shows a successful install but after a reboot Windows update presents the same updates to install and checking Control Panel for installed updates there have been none since Nov ! I’ve tried download the update files from Windows Update catalog and installing them that way, they report as successful but again nothing shows in the Installed updates view and if you reboot the “installed” update is offered in Windows Update and the manual install of the update is allowed again.
No errors in the Windowsupdate. This machine used to be managed by SCCM but in my troubleshooting of this issue I’ve uninstalled that and even when it was installed trying to use Microsoft as the update source made no difference. I’ve used DISM and specified another server for the Source location but it fails saying it can’t see the source location even though it can. I’ve tried slipstreaming the ISO and using that was a Source but get the same error.
Thanks for the suggestion, I’ve tried the first part, will take a look at the link and see if that helps out. I would try downloading and installing the latest service stack update from Microsoft Update catalog.
If you can allow some downtime, you could also reboot in safe mode to see if any previous update gets rolled back. I’ve had to do this on a server and had to setup a script to run the process because the Update process sometimes wants to restart right away. If it’s in a script to down the service then delete the files it’s sometimes fast enough to avoid the service starting up again.
It took me downloading the updates directly and reading the fail logs of CBS to find out what the root issue really was. After some major tweaking and 12 reboots and installs, we finally got it to work. Basically you’ll need to plan on down time and do the Windows Updates Cleanup first and try to install, if that still fails, download the updates directly form Windows Catalog and try to manually install what’s missing.
If it fails doing this, you’ll probably need to check the log files to find out why as it could be a system check that could fix it or an update that partially installed that you’ll need to reinstall or uninstall.
